The Kennametal 60 is a boron carbide insert with a straight bore. The insert is suitable for blast guns and other compatible holders with a cylindrical 9/16" insert format. The insert has an outside diameter of 14.3 mm (9/16"). One bore size is available: 1/4" (#4 / 6.4 mm), with an overall length of 38.1 mm (1-1/2").
Boron carbide typically provides five to ten times longer service life than tungsten carbide when used with aggressive abrasives, such as aluminium oxide and selected mineral abrasives. This makes the insert particularly suitable for applications where wear resistance and durability are more important than the lowest purchase price.
For less intensive applications, a tungsten carbide insert in the same 9/16" format, such as the TL104, can be a more economical alternative. For sustained use with aluminium oxide or hard mineral abrasives, boron carbide is usually the better choice. Its higher wear resistance can allow the 60 Series to reduce the cost per blasting hour, despite the higher purchase price.
Boron carbide is more brittle than tungsten carbide — careful handling during use is required to prevent cracking.
